Tokyo, Japan – waitingroom is pleased to announce the gallery’s forth exhibition, Where There are Trees – Yunmee Kyong Solo Exhibition, through September 12th to October 24th. This would be Kyong’s first solo exhibition in Tokyo, Japan. The exhibition will be comprised of print works, sculptures, and several handmade zines and art goodies.

Kyong was born in Korea, attained BFA at Kingston University (Surrey, UK), and MFA at the School of Visual Arts (NY, NY). She is currently living and working in Brooklyn, NY. The theme of Kyong’s work is based on the idea of “World Peace” among different cultures and ethnics. She creates landscapes with elements from different ethnics, nationalities, and religions into her paintings, sculptures, silkscreen prints and many different mediams.

“I am interested in different world cultures – their beliefs about life and death, customs and folk tales. While looking at a world of conflict, I imagined gods from different religions sharing food and music together.” – Yunmee Kyong

Kyong creates a universal world of different cultures and religions in a vivid color and detailed texture. She incorporates the landscapes of the countries she chooses or has visited as backgrounds of her work. Hence, the landscape becomes a place where all kinds of human could exist and share the moment together. She is also interested in the colors and patterns of the clothing and costume from different countries and combines them into her work. Each element of different cultures meets in a universal landscape and creates a harmony of life.

The show is titled “Where There are Trees”. The tree has been told as a metaphor of many different things from the past. A solid root could be the principle of the world peace, branches to be rich cultures… The tree for Kyong could reflect the principle of her art making.

Yunmee Kyong has exhibited at Flux Factory (Queens, NY), Metaphor Contemporary (Brooklyn, NY), School of Visual Arts Gallery (New York, NY), AG Gallery (Brooklyn, NY) and many more. Her work has been published in American Illustration, D & AD Annual, Illustration Now, Curvy 3, Society of Illustration. She also works for wide range of clients such as New York Times, New Yorker, Los Angels Times, Whole Foods Market Magazine, 21 Design Magazine and many others. She recently finished an artist in residency program at CAMAC, Centre d'Art Marnay Art Centre, in France. Kyong lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
